Way before Bruce Springsteen was composing and performing his own music, he developed his muse by listening, listening and listening again to the records that would live with him through his life and career. Records which, you can bet your life, he still listens to today. Cuts from Elvis, Chuck Berry and Johnny Cash were later joined by the Phil Spector sound and The Rolling Stones - which in turn made room for Van Morrison, and later still even New York s art-punk terrorists Suicide. There were also classic 45's which captured the Boss by the throat and have never let go Quarter to Three by Gary (US) Bonds and Devil In A Blue Dress from Mitch Ryder spring to mind here. During his more recent career Bruce developed a love for the captivating story songs of Woody Guthrie and the crystal folk of Pete Segar These artists and others too have inspired and informed Springsteen's compositions and performances in a manner that very few major artists with the possible exception of Bob Dylan would either admit to or have the confidence and state of grace to accept. Bruce Springsteen Under the Influence examines the foundations of his craft and illustrates the huge influence that artists such as these have had on him throughout his career. This superb program also looks broadly at the political, literary and cultural influences that have affected New Jersey's favourite son, and all at once provides the most detailed and fascinating film ever made about Springsteen's inspiration. Featuring rare footage of Bruce and all of his favourites, alongside revealing archive interviews with The Boss himself, and insightful contributions from Vini Lopez and Gary Mallaber (ex of the E Street Band), Gary (US) Bonds, biographer Eric Alterman, Rolling Stone s Anthony De Curtis and numerous other associates, experts and influences.
