- It is a mysterious, fabled, and priceless work of art painted by Johannes Vermeer in the 17th century. Today it is in the possession of an eccentric private-school teacher (Glenn Close), who has devoted her life to researching its sometimes painful, sometimes inspired history. She decides to share her passion for the painting - and its history - with another teacher at the school (Thomas Gibson), whom she introduces to her father, a man with a terrible but exquisite family secret. As the intriguing past unfolds, so do the lives of the painting's previous owners, all linked inextricably and tragically to the enduring legend of one painting.
