Synopsis:
Murderers, rapists, stool pigeons , drug addicts. They were the feared ones, the criminals who really ran Carandiru, Brazil's largest correctional facility: Ebony, an honorable thief and respected leader; Highness, a smooth operator with two families to support; Ezequiel, an ex-surfer turned crack addict; Dagger, a brutal killer with God on his side. They were among the prison's elite, the select few who ruled Carandiru by their own codes and laws. A rule that would end in bloodshed when 300 policemen stormed the facility and brutally murdered 111 unarmed inmates. This is the true story of that infamous day in October 1992, a day that shocked the world. The day of the Carandiru Massacre.

Disturbing, moving, fascinating - Carandiru review by CP Customer

Spoiler Alert

Based on a true story this is a sad and shocking film. It is also a very warm and moving film with very likeable personalities, despite their horrific crimes. If you don't mind having to read the subtitles (I personally love foreign films, in particular Latin American films) then this really is a fantasic watch. Don't get it for a cosy, relaxing night in, though...

Epic account of notorious massacre - Carandiru review by TE

Spoiler Alert
27/11/2019

Based on the horrific Carandiru Prison massacre, this film captures the essence of the chaotic, violent and de-humanised world of the prison in the build-up to the massacre.

The story is told from the perspective of the humane doctor sent in to try to increase awareness of the dangers of AIDS. His relaxed humourous approach brings out the occasional moments of warmth that exist in the most unlikely settings.

The film is sometimes a little too episodic, but it ultimately builds towards a compelling, tragic climax.

Not bad for a rainy day - Carandiru review by CP Customer

I regularly watch world cinema movies, and this one was ok. Some of the ideas and plot lines are good but the climax leads to a rather dull ending. Overall it is worth a watch if you have nothing better to do.
