It's the summer of 1945 and factory worker Karl Bluecher (Erwin Geschonnek) leaves Dresden for Wittenberg to try and procure barrels of highly-rationed carbide in hope of re-starting production at the cigarette factory he's employed at. Everyone is depending on him and he seems the ideal man for the job - his brother in law works at the carbide plant and he's a vegetarian - he can eat whatever's growing at the roadside and save food! 'Kalle' as he's known, beggars everyone's belief and gets to Wittenberg but now there's the small matter of getting seven barrels of carbide back to Dresden...
