This dramatisation, loosely based on the memoirs of the 18th centur libertine, was Dennis Potter's first adaptation and his first TV series. The six-part series explored the life of the infamous adventurer from his escape from imprisonment at the hands of the Venetian authorities to his many romantic encounters. There was much eyebrow-raising in 1971 at the series' sexual content, but in the stories of a young nobleman devoted to pleasure we can detect Potter developing his style and beginning to explore his favourite themes of paralysis, ego and the power of memory.
