Cuban director Humberto Solas's award-winning film set during that country's drive to abolish slavery in the 1830's. Raised by her mother and grandmother as a courtesan within the ruling white establishment, pale-skinned Cecilia (Daisy Granados) soon catches the eye of estate owner's son Leonardo (Imanol Arias). Exploiting her position of power, Cecilia bows to Leonardo's demands providing he agrees to shelter a wounded member of the resistance movement at his home. Unknown to Cecilia, Leonardo's wealthy father has other plans for his son, namely marriage to a woman of equal social standing.
