The Sufis are the mystical sect of Islam and qawwali is the form of music they have developed in India and Pakistan, since the 15th Century, indeed the name of the mystical poet, musician, dancer, warrior and courtier, Amir Kursau (1253-1553), is inseparable from Qawwali history. It is unlikely that a Qawwali session would take place without one of his texts being sung. The intensity of feeling in the singers voice is the central focus of the music, accompanied with an explosive rhythm of vigorous hand-clapping, blended with the melodic and rhythmic percussive sounds, usually today a hand-pumped harmonium and by the tabla, which together provokes a state of exaltation bordering on trance. For the first time on video, these internationally renowned artists, with Mehr and Sher Ali, Faiz and Waheed uz Zafar, immensly popular stars in their own country, perform the Qawwali ceremony here in its customary and ceremonial form, dedicated to the memory of the XVII century Punjabi soufi poet Bullhe Shah, filmed live at the Festival de I'lmaginaire in Paris.
