The legendary Don Garlits truly deserves the place he has earned in drag racing's Hall of Fame. No man has ever shaped the destiny of his chosen sport more than the "Big Daddy", both in technical innovation and sheer professionalism. In a career spanning several decades, Don has seen pretenders to his crown come and go, but retains his enthusiasm for the sport he has made his own. From the Don Garlits Museum, which houses all his record-breaking dragsters, Don reminisces on the milestones of a life dedicated to making the standard quarter mile shrink to a 5 second blink! The triumphs, disasters, highs and lows of this champion of the drag strip are recalled. Don was the first man to run a 250mph terminal speed standing quarter, and once tripped the lights with this terminal speed backwards after his car flipped! More than five decades after his first major victory, Garlits remains committed to his sport. In late 2007 he delighted more than 50,000 fans at the Nitro Nationals in Bakersfield, California, as he returned to the strip with two of his famous Swamp Rat racers, and our cameras were there to capture the moment.
