Where everybody knows your name...'Cheers' is a TV series that, having opened with pitifully low ratings in the USA in 1982, went on to become one of the most popular series on air. 'Cheers' is a Boston bar where "everyone knows vour name". This little local bar is owned by Sam "Mayday" Mialone, a Boston Red Sox Pitcher, who drank hirnself out of the game. Working for Malone is Diane Chambers, a jilted teaching assistant and Ernie Pantusso known as Coach. Malone fancies Diane but it is not to be and Diane makes Fraiser Crane, a troubled psychiatrist, her boyfriend for a while. Other regulars are Norm Peterson, an accountant-turned-painter with an enormous bar tab and Cliff Claven, an ageing postman still living with his mother. The drinkers at Cheers muddle through their lives, sharing their experiences and opinions and trying to support and help one another. At the close of the series in 1993, 'Frasier' , an offshoot about the troubled psychiatrist, took on similar characters and became immensely popular.
