In July of 1953, Arizona state troopers invade Short Creek, a remote desert town north of the Grand Canyon. In this village reside a small group of religious polygamists whose lives were ruled by a group of select elders, 'The Brethren." Against this backdrop develops the tale on an unlikely, star-crossed romance. Nineteen-year-old Isaac King (Christopher Atkins) returns from the Korean War to become frustrated and discouraged by his village's blind acceptance of the Brethren's strict doctrines. He falls in love with Jessica Ray Jacobs (Diane Lane), a lovely curious fifteen-year-old who is promised in marriage to Isaac's father Frank (Conrad Bain), the devout town leader. Rebelling against Short Creek's codes, the youngsters plan to run away but the unexpected invasion alters the course of their lives forever…
