Bradbury's film traces the 12 years from 1973 to 1985 of General Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship whose forces seized power in a bloody, US-backed coup that left the democratically elected Marxist president Salvador Allende dead, and with him any hopes of democracy remaining in Chile. The filmmaker's time in Chile culminates with a poignant sequence near the end of the film when an architect and teacher are kidnapped and murdered by Pinochet's secret police. The outpouring of emotion by the man's son, a wife and the nation is an unforgettable moment in the film. Chile: Hasta Cuando? (when will it end?) reveals the tragedy of a divided country, a country on the verge of eruption.
