Founded by William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson, later to be joined by Arthur's brothers Walter and William, Harley-Davidson has been producing motorcycles since 1903. Building just three bikes in that first year, production was moved in 1904 to a shed behind the Davidsons' house, where they were able to begin work on the 30 cubic-inch 'single' that was later to be named 'the Silent Grey Fellow'. In this programme from 2004, while looking at Harley-Davidson motorcycles from a century of production, we concentrate on the history of the first 50 years. What's so great about Harley-Davidson? If you have to ask, you wouldn't understand.
