Claudio Abbado has made a name for himself as one of the great Verdi conductors of our time, not least as artistic director of La Scala, Milan, from 1968 to 1986. He enjoyed his greatest acclaim in this repertory with works that are also central to the present gala: Un Ballo in maschera, Don Carlos and Falstaff. Seconding him are not only the Berliner Philharmoniker, taking audible pleasure in their inaccustomed role as an opera orchestra, but also a number a number of the most successful young Verdi singers of the present day.
