In January 1984, the iconic Marquee Club in London was the venue for a truly magnificent performance by the Climax Blues Band. Featuring original members Peter Haycock and the late Colin Cooper, the group played to a full-house with their unique blend of blues and soft-rock. The US and UK Top 10 hit Couldn't Get It Right, Going To New York and Blackjack And Me are just a few of the songs recorded as part of the Live From London series. During the late 1960's, the UK became the centre of a boom in blues as a new generation of music fan sort different sounds and experiences. At the forefront of the movement was the Climax Chicago Blues Band (as they were then known), led by lead vocalist and saxophonist Colin Cooper. With the original line-up of Cooper, guitarists Peter Haycock and Derek Holt, Arthur Wood on keyboards, Richard Jones on bass and drummer George Newsome, the band released their self-titled first album in 1969. In the same year, following the departure of Jones, Plays On became the band's second album release before moving to the Harvest label in 1970. It prompted a change in musical style as they shifted towards a more rock oriented sound, evident on their next album A Lot Of Bottle. By 1974 the band had gone through personnel changes (now consisting of Cooper, Haycock, Holt, Peter Filleul on keyboards and John Cuffley on drums) and had also dropped the Chicago from their name. It seemed to pay dividends as their 1975 release Stamp Album was the commercial breakthrough they had been waiting for. It was followed quickly by Gold Plated which built on their success thanks in no small part to the smash hit Couldn't Get It Right . But like so many other bands at the time, the emergence and rise in popularity of punk rock rang the death knell for the Climax Blues Band. Forced to re examine their future, the group abandoned their blues heritage and by 1981 were primarily a pop-rock act. With the departure of Holt and Cuffley in 1983, the band once again embarked on a period of line-up changes but still released albums including Drastic Steps, Blues From The Attic and most recently Big Blues.
