"Confetti" is an empowering and uplifting story of a mother's love and determination and is all the more remarkable for the fact that it's based on the life and experiences of the film's director and writer Ann Hu. The film stars Amy Irving and Helen Slater alongside popular Chinese actress Zhu Zhu and rising young star Harmonie He. It's the story of Lan, living in a small town in China where her daughter Meimei goes to the local school. Despite outwardly seeming confident and extremely smart, it soon becomes apparent that there's a problem with Meimei's reading and writing. It's left to an American teacher at the school to recognise that she suffers from dyslexia but there are no special schools anywhere in China that can help. So, armed with very little money, just a name and address to contact on arrival and speaking no English, Lan decides to leave behind the life she knows and take Meimei to America to find the help she seeks for her daughter. Of course things are never that easy and this is where the real fight for Meimei's right to education really begins. What Lan and Meimei discover along the way is that, in a world where people are judged and often not seen, their courage to succeed against all odds will eventually lead them to people who do see them for who they truly are. This is multi-award-winning Ann Hu's third film but her most personal and it's her goal to raise awareness for dyslexia by creating a global movement.
