Lionel Evans (Charlton Heston) is the director of a well-respected symphony orchestra touring liberated European concert halls as the Allies push the Nazis back in 1944. But when the city where they are playing is attacked by German troops on a counteroffensive, Evans and his musicians captured by Nazis led by Colonel Arndt (Anton Diffring). The orchestra is transported to a castle where they are to be executed, but Arndt's superior, General Schiller (Maximilian Schell), is a lover of classical music who commands Evans to prepare a special concert for the Nazis. Evans realises however, that as soon as the concert is over, his orchestra will be killed, and so begins a deadly game of cat and mouse...
