At first light on the 6th of June 1944, the Allied forces launched the largest combined land, air and sea operation ever from Southern England to liberate Europe from, the grip of Hitler's Nazi occupation. Code named Overlord, the entire operation was a tremendous gamble. The element of surprise was paramount, so the Allies led the Germans to believe that the attack would not be at Normandy but at Calais. This programme, portrayed both in black and white, as well as rare colour footage tells this incredible compelling story in three features.
Feature 1: The Build Up The preparation for the greatest sea and air armada ever known.
Feature 2: The Invasion With the outcome anything but certain, the Allies' element of surprise was paramount to victory.
Feature 3: The Breakout Phase 1: The Landing - 6th June 1944
Phase 2: Expanding The Foothold - the complete breakout from the Normandy beachhead ending on 27th July 1944.
