Getting into the third year of the war 1942 the Americans wished to invade France but the British were not convinced that this was a viable propositon after a lot of deliberation they found a compromise. First North Africa was invaded shortly followed by Sicily, then Italy in the hope that this throw the Germans off balance, this was a successful ploy as the Germans didn't know where the allies would invade next, Norway, Denmark, Northern or Southern France, Portugal, or the Balkans. German divisions in the West were spread to thinly too cover all these possible invasion sites. The Germans were expecting, convinced by allied intelligence that if the invasion was to be in Northern France it would take place at the Pas de Calais so when the invasion forces landed at Normandy the Germans were completely surprised and by the time the Germans released their Panzer reserves it was just too late... - Studio:
