The blunt-talking Detective Superintendent Andy Dalziel does not suffer fools gladly, but he has even more trouble with what he calls the "smart arses" of this world. So when the inexperienced Peter Pascoe joins his team at Mid-Yorkshire CID.the omens don't look good. Pascoe is one of the new breed of career police officers, armed with a degree, a caring attitude and a sharp brain. At Holm Coltram University, the body of an unknown middle-aged woman is accidentally unearthed underneath a statue. As they start their investigations, Andy feels like a fish out of water - while his partner reacquaints himself with Ellie, one of the lecturers.

With Peter on honeymoon, Dalziel sets off on a holiday of his own. Meeting and falling for the recently widowed, Bonnie Fielding, he stays in her country home. But when her son Nigel goes missing, Dalziel finds a mystery of fraud, murder and family conspiracy.
