In 1957, Sir David Attenborough first visited and dived on one of our planet's most extraordinary creations, the 'Great Barrier Reef'. Sixty years on, using brand-new technology and the latest scientific research, the world's most renowned naturalist dives down into uncharted waters to unlock the secrets of the Reef. Immersed in the state-of-the-art Triton submersible, David descends beneath the waves, reaching depths never before explored by man, to reveal the mystery of the reef at night, the shark-infested waters of Osprey Reef and countless incredible species that make it their home. He continues his exploration aboard the research vessel Alucia where he discovers the creatures that visit the reef every year, from birds to whales, some travelling thousands of kilometres to get there. Yet the coral has been dying at an unprecedented rate and in David's most important mission he seeks to understand what the next few decades hold for this remarkable community of animals. In spite of all that is being done by research scientists in their attempts to rejuvenate the reef, David fears for the future of this incredibly complex and beautiful eco-system.
