Dead Heads (aka Deadheads) review by Melissa Orcine - Cinema Paradiso

What if there are two smart zombies living in the Zombie Apocalypse?

The flick ‘Dead Heads’ explores this what-if scenario and gives it a comedic twist. One day, Mike (Michael McKiddy) awakes and finds himself inexplicably transformed – he is a zombie, from the army of the undead, and yet, hey, his brain is still functioning. He also then meets a fellow smart-ass (well, compared to their zombie-brained cohorts), Brent (Ross Kidder). They become fast buds and realize they could do so much more than being brain and flesh-eating zombies – how about a road trip?! It turns out Mike wants to reconnect with his old flame Ellie (Natalie Victoria) since it’s the Zombie Apocalypse, you need to tell the truth. And the truth is: Mike is in love with Ellie and he’s hitting the road to let her know.

‘Deadheads’ is not your typical zombie flick; it’s obvious because the leads in Mike and Brent can actually converse with each other, they think and function like real human beings – except they look like real zombies.

This is in the vein of ‘Shaun of the Dead’, a romantic comedy with zombies. If Shaun and the gang are trying to fend off zombies while trapped in their favorite pub, ‘Dead Heads’ has its own wannabe Simon Pegg and Nick Frost going all ‘Y Tu Mama Tambien’ road trip to love and self-discovery. Who knew zombies could be so romantic?!

The flick seems like a candidate for straight-to-DVD glory since it has a young, unknown cast with not-so-experienced behind-the-scenes people at the helm – it’s written, produced, and directed by the Pierce Brothers. See, you don’t know anyone in this production! However, they’ve spun another tale involving zombies that isn’t trite and still full of blood and gore, as it should. You have to give props to ‘Dead heads’ film makers for trying something new. It does scream ridiculous that zombies have feelings and can even have the audacity to drive a car on a cross-country road trip, but whatever. You can’t fault them for being amusingly different.

For zombies with unbelievable heart.
