Lonnrot (Peter Boyle), an infallible detective , declares war on the notorious outlaw Red Scharlach (Christopher Eccleston) after Scharlach pulls off a particularly daring robbery. The mysterious murder of a Talmudic priest provides Lonnrot with a clue which leads him and Inspector Treviranus (Miguel Sandoval) to the Liverpool Bar, in search of the kidnapped tipster Gryphius (Christopher Eccleston). From there, accompanied by atheist reporter Zunz (Christopher Eccleston), Lonnrot follows Scharlach to the Villa Triste-Le-Roy, and unravels the greatest mystery of all. (The story of Lonnrot's investigation is told by his ex-boss, Commissioner Treviranus, now an ancient and embittered hermit living in a decaying mansion).
