Synopsis:
Paul Pennyfeather (Jack Whitehall), a dedicated divinity student set upon a quiet life of contemplation as a priest, is unceremoniously expelled from Oxford University through no fault of his own. This kickstarts a series of disastrous events that no-one, least of all Paul, could have anticipated. Without a private fortune to fall back on, Paul is forced to take a position as a teacher at a substandard boarding school in rural Wales. All too quickly it becomes apparent that Paul is not a natural disciplinarian. He finds scant comfort in drinking to excess with the other teachers.
Things start to look up, however, when Paul meets Margot Beste-Chetwynde (Eva Longoria), a wealthy widow and a mother to one of the boys at the school. Could it be that the attraction Paul feels for Margot is returned? Could his fortunes be changing?

Great TV adaptation of novel - Decline and Fall review by JR

Spoiler Alert
04/07/2021

I first read "Decline and Fall" at school 40 plus years ago and saw this TV version when it was new in 2017 and have just seen it again on DVD.

It is a great adaptation and the characters are drawn very well and are faithful to the book. Jack Whitehall is so good as Paul Pennyfeather, it 's a pity he doesn't do more acting . David Suchet is so funny as Dr Fagan as is Douglas Hodge as Mr Grimes who has what can only be described as a "gay limp"! Lovely characterisation.

Great costumes and sets. Amazingly the scene supposedly meant to be in France were actually filmed in my home city of Bristol!

Throughly recommended.
