Synopsis:
"The Flying Dutchman" is considered the first "true" Wagner opera. The story of the Phantom Ship and its haunted master becomes a sensual drama of love and tragic sacrifice, and the original 1841 version here leaves the final salvation of its protagonists unfulfilled. Wagner had originally conceived this opera for Paris, so it is fitting that this staging from the Theater an der Wien be determined by the unique vision of the French director Olivier Py, whose spectacular, aesthetically impressive staging also many misunderstandings about Wagner's art out of the way acknowledges.
