When Ronnie James Dio - former frontman with Elf, Rainbow & Black Sabbath - decided to bring together the musicians for a brand new project, he was firmly convinced about two things... Firstly, that the drummer would be Vinny Appice, a close friend & ally who he'd played with previously in Sabbath; and secondly, that he wanted a guitar player from across the Atlantic. What he wasn't sure about was the name of the band, although it soon became clear that - given Ronnie's already illustrious past - 'Dio' was far & away the most logical choice... As for the guitarist, well, for this RJD went to his old Rainbow pal, bassist Jimmy Bain, a man with his finger firmly on the pulse when it came to seeking out fresh talent; Bain it was who suggested Vivian Campbell, a young Irishman playing in a band called Sweet Savage and after a couple of rehearsals in a North London studio it was patently obvious that the line-up was complete, with the ex-Rainbow four-stringer taking charge of bass duties himself. Dio had been born and the delivery was suitably noisy.
