Matt Preston (Elias Koteas), a horse trainer, is married to Terry (Wendie Malick), a T.V. celebrity. Matt is stunned to find out that his marriage is over while in his first therapy session with his wife. He moves into Hollywood and seeks comfort from his best friends, Kay (Denise Crosby) and Lacey (Talia Shire), only to find that their seemingly good marriages are in worse shape than his own. Tony (Christopher McDonald), Kay's husband, confesses to Matt that he has become addicted to smoking heroin and a porno movie star. Matt's advice to tell Kay everything gets Tony thrown out of his marriage and into matt's house. Meanwhile Lacey, trying to comfort Matt, reveals that she is being threatened by her manic-depressive husband, Gary (Terry Kiser); a high powered lawyer who buys guns instead of jewelery. Matt goes to Gary to try and talk some sense into him, but Gary's increasingly psychotic behavior causes Lacey to turn the tables and take aim at him giving him a dose of his own abusive behavior before she walks out of her marriage. In his ensuing rage, Gary takes everything Lacey owns and blasts it to oblivion. Out of this rubble of broken relationships, Matt finally comes to terms with the mistakes he has made and decides to move on. A few years later we find Matt in a loving relationship with a new woman doing what he does best...training horses.
