I wasn't sure about Earth: Final Conflict at first, but having now watched the entire first series, I would definitely recommend it. This was originally created by the late Gene Roddenberry, creator of Star Trek, but it is definitely a different programme; his widow who was also a Star Trek actress, Majel Barrett, is executive producer and appears in several episodes but that's about all that superficially connects the two series.
Some of the SFX have dated a bit, but alot of the design elements hold up well, such as the alien Taelons themselves. A few episodes fall slightly flat, with a few too many unanswered plot aspects at times but, overall, there's some interesting ideas here. The lead actors are engaging: unlike Star Trek, characters do clash regularly and have duplicitous agendas which they have to conceal. This leads to some interesting moral dilemmas for the main character, played with conviction by Kevin Kilner, to deal with. Unfortunately, only series 1 seems to be available to rent and I would really like to see how the story develops in series 2.
In short, if you liked the original series of V then you'll probably like this.
