The Eastern Counties Steam weekend organized by the West Anglian and Great Northern Railway in June 1995 certainly proved to be an event to remember, with three mainline steam locomotives in action including two examples of the famous streamlined Gresley A/4 Pacifies. This officially commissioned and superbly made film captures the spirit and excitement of the weekend, with plenty of line side action from along the entire route from Bishops Stortford to Ely, as well as some exciting and contrasting footplate rides with the crew onboard Union of South Africa and Britannia.
Featured locos are:
- 70000 Britannia which was the very first of the British Railways Standard steam locomotives to be built, and is now owned by the Britannia Locomotive Company.
- 60009 Union of South Africa which is owned by John Cameron. This famous A/4 holds the record for having clocked up the highest mileage of the class.
- 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley which proudly bears the name of the designer and Chief Mechanical Engineer of the LNER who was responsible for the design of the distinguished A/4's, and is now owned by the A/4 Preservation Society.
If you were lucky enough to be there you'll be certain to enjoy this fine record of a superb weekend's mainline steam action. If you weren't able to get a long then this entertaining programme is the next best thing!
