Vishal (Dharmendra) is a poet, gloriously impractical, Aruna (Sharmila Tagore) is a hard-working secretary to Mr. Anand Kumar (Ashok Kumar), boss of a huge publishing firm. Their love seems destined to culminate in a happy marriage when tragedy strikes sweet Aruna. She learns that she will go blind in a few months. Rather than put the burden of supporting a blind wife in addition to a crippled mother, Aruna seeks to end her life. Mr. Anand Kumar however stops her, and offers her an honourable marriage, a marriage in name only. She accepts, little realising what disastrous consequences it will have on Vishal. The poet is now embittered against all womanhood. He starts on the downward path of drink and dissolute living. And then a sweet angel enters his life. She is Sonia (Leena Chandavarkar), lovely daughter of Mr. Anand Kumar, who returns home from abroad only to find herself in the middle of somebody else's huartbreak, which soon becomes her own. "It was a woman's love that destroyed Vishal" she says "it can only be a woman's love which will make him whole again". But does it?
