This is a fascinating film showing a classic rail journey that takes in all the sights and sounds of classical southern Italy travelling from Rome to the southern tip of Italy and then on to the island of Sicily. During this rail journey the train travels through Italy's south, visiting some of the Mediterranean's most beautiful coastline and skirting some of Italy's wildest mountains; including Europe's great active volcanoes, Vesuvius and Mount Etna. Starting in the magnificent capital city of Rome with it's ancient monuments, the train journeys down to the hustle and bustle of Naples, taking in the enchanting Amalfi coast with it's crystal clear waters and villages that cling to the rock face, before continuing the journey south were we end up on the island of Sicily. The train even takes the ferry across the water to this exotic and extraordinary nation at the foot of Italy. Filmed over twenty years ago and now avaliable on video for the first time, the series of 'European Railway Journeys' films explores the many varied cultures and countries across Europe, travelling by train which gives a different perspective to the cities and towns visited on the way. Stunning scenery, breathtaking architecture and beautiful landscapes combine to give the viewer a unique travel experience.
