In the mid-nineteenth century, the household of Mister Wentworth (Wesley Addy), a few miles outside Boston, receives two unannounced guests from Europe - Eugenia (Lee Remick) and Felix (Tim Woodward), the daughter and son of his half-sister. Wentworth's own daughter Gertrude (Lisa Eichhorn) becomes immediately besotted with her newly found cousins and their bohemian lifestyle starts to entice her away from the puritanical upbringing she has been used to and her family intended for her.
