Roddy Doyle's first original screenplay 'Family' was one of the most successful television programmes ever broadcast on RTE and a watershed moment in Irish television history. Set in a bleak Dublin housing estate, the four-part drama follows the lives of the Spencer family and deals with many of the social issues facing Irish families at the time. The compelling and multi-award winning Family stimulated a string of political debates across Ireland following its broadcast. Doyle's typically uncompromising narrative in each episode comes from a different family member - rebellious teenagers, an abusive alcoholic father and a mentally and physically battered mother. Ignited by Charlo Spencer's violent behaviour, infidelities and criminal activities, his wife and children are driven to breaking point.
