Finn Mortensen has been an important figure in Norwegian musical life since the 1950's. Mortensen was an open-minded modernist and internationalist who would never let the technique and composing system dominate his musical intuition. His works are marked by a personal, romantic expression, which gives distance to his modernism. Finn Mortensen was the first professor of composition at the Norwegian Academy of Music from 1973 and has had a great influence on the following generations of Norwegian composers. The Stavanger Symphony Orchestra (SSO) has established itself as one of the most successful orchestras in Scandinavia. The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation founded the orchestra in 1938 as the Stavanger musikerforenings orkester, for radio broadcasts. The orchestra's first artistic leader was the violinist Gunnar Knudsen, from 1938 to 1945. In 1965, the orchestra's name was changed to the Symfoniorkestret Stavanger, and again in 1982 to its present name. It has achieved outstanding artistic development and is attracting an ever growing following in Norway and abroad. The orchestra regularly tours Europe and has also achieved great acclaim for concerts in the USA and Japan. In 2012 the orchestra moved into its present home, the Stavanger Konserthus, Stavanger s new state-of-the-art concert hall. The Fartein Valen Orchestra Hall is a first-class concert hall with outstanding acoustics. Conductor Peter Szilvay is a notable interpreter of new music, a significant amount of which he has premiered and recorded and is also a conductor of opera. He is also one of a growing number of young versatile conductors who learned their trade from inside the orchestra. After working as a professional viola player, Peter served as Assistant Conductor to Mariss Jansons at the Oslo Philharmonic and later held the same position at the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra. He has since conducted many illustrious European orchestras. In 2011, Peter was recognized for his work with contemporary music when the Society of Norwegian Composers awarded him their Artist Prize.
