Fleeing by Night (2000)

In this drama set in the 1930's and directed by Li Kong Hsu and Chi Yin, Shaodung, a Chinese cellist born in America, goes home to Beijing to meet a woman arranged to be his wife, Ing'er. But his heart has other plans. In spite of his own inner conflict and instead of loving Ing'er, his attentions shift to a male opera singer, Lin Chun. The twist confounds Shaodung and those in his life.
