Liam Brady began his career at Arsenal as a schoolboy apprentice in 1971 and turned professional on his 17th birthday in 1973. While he put in a good performance at his debut game against Birmingham City, he never really cemented his place in the team and ended the 1973/4 season with 13 appearances, four of them as a substitute. By the 1974/5 season he was a first team regular at Arsenal and helped save them as they hovered close to relegation for a couple of seasons in the mid seventies. When Terry Neil was appointed manager and Don Howe returned as coach, Brady found his best form. He helped Arsenal reach three F.A. Cup Finals in a row - winning the final against Manchester United in 1979 it was Brady who started the move that ended in Alan Sunderland's famous last minute winner. He was easily the best player in a young, promising side but it wasn't to last as the team and the fans knew Brady would need to move on to a bigger challenge. After Arsenal beat Juventus 2 - 1 in Turin (it was unheard of for Italians to lose home European ties back then), Juventus were so impressed with Brady they signed him for just over £500 000 in the 1980 close season leaving behind a wake of broken hearted fans. He retired from football in May 1990 after having played for a variety of clubs after Juventus. Brady won 72 international caps for the Republic of Ireland scoring 9 goals. Due to injury and a suspension accrued before Euro 88, he never played in any major competitions and retired from International Football during qualification for Italia 90. He is remembered as one of Arsenals all time greats, playing 307 matches scoring 59 goals and setting up many more. He was chosen as PFA player of the year in 1979 - being from the Republic of Ireland, he was the first player from outside of Britain to win the award. Brady went on to have two spells managing Celtic (1991 - 1993) and Brighton and Hove Albion (1993 - 1995) before returning to Arsenal in 1996 as Head of Youth Development and Academy Director where he remains today.
