Sejong (Suk-kyu Han), the 4th king of Chosun, has been interested in advancing science and technology. He appoints Jang Young-sil (Min-sik Choi), a slave and scientific genius, to be a low-level officer despite a bitter opposition of the court. Jang blossoms his talents by making the most accurate water clock that has ever made. Sejong wants to create a new calendar that can replace the Chinese one from the Ming Dynasty. Under the king's order, Jang makes Ganeui, an advanced astronomical observation tool. For 20 years, Sejong and Jang's friendship has propelled advances in Chosun's scientific technology. The aristocracies still condemn Jang to mess up the class system, and the court plot to scrap the astronomy projects, concerning the relationship with Ming would estrange.
