Sony Classical is pleased to announce the release of ‘The Sarajevo Concert’ by the Vienna Philharmonic under Franz Welser-Möst. On June 28th, 2014, the Vienna Philharmonic under Franz Welser-Möst played the Concert in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, commemorating the Centenary of the Assassination at Sarajevo on June 28th, 1914. The concert took place in the National Library of Sarajevo, meters from the site where Austro-Hungarian heir Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated exactly 100 years previously. Performance fees were waived for the concert, which featured a musical program with strong connections to the historical events of 1914-1918, inviting reflection, analysis and remembrance of an era-defining conflict. The concert was relayed free to giant screens outside the Vijecnica to a large public audience. The New York Times wrote: “If there was a moment that captured better than any other the light and the dark in Sarajevo’s centenary weekend, marking 100 years since the events here that unleashed the demons of World War I, it came with the opening bars of Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy.” As the music of the Vienna Philharmonic soared through the great atrium of Sarajevo’s rebuilt City Hall, and from a giant screen erected for a crowd gathered on the opposite side of the Miljacka River, it was possible for a few moments to forget the more recent outbursts of sectarian recrimination that have clouded the commemorations of the assassinations on June 28, 1914. - Studio:
