This is a very enjoyable low budget American independent movie that shows a side of the States we rarely see. We follow a fractured family trying to get by and despite all their best efforts and intensions; things just seem to become worse. The mother is the central core of the unit: always maintaining that her kids must see through school. At her lowest ebb she stumbles across a money making opportunity that whilst illegal will solve all her current worries. And as we know from the movies what seems like a good opportunity often comes with strings attached! A remarkable insight into the poverty line in America, Frozen River also shows us the harsh realities of life in a tough climate and on an Indian Reservation.
I didn't find the scenario of a mother trailing back and forth across a frozen river, mostly in the dark of night, to assist with getting illegal immigrants into the country either uplifting or entertaining. I realised she was down on her luck and needed money to pay for her new extra wide mobile home. That said, I found difficulty in empathising with her plight due to the way she was getting the money to pay for it.
