By connecting the fascinating historical stories of the country's first criminal fraternities (from Manchester's Scuttlers, and Birmingham's Brummagems to The Liverpool Cornermen) with the multi faceted gangs of today, they build up a criminal Who Do You Think You Are, full of amazing stories, characters and facts of British gangs. In each episode Gary and Martin visit a different city where they tell the connected stories of one modern day and one historical gang, through interview, archive and re-construction.
Birmingham Gary and Martin Kemp turn their attentions to Birmingham. Gangs in the early 20th century turned Britain's racetracks into battlegrounds. A Birmingham gang called the Brummagems were the top dogs and built up a criminal network extending far beyond their city. They made fortunes from racetrack extortion and beat their rivals mercilessly to protect their territory. The same city and over 80 years later in 2003 another, seemingly random drive by shooting, kills innocent bystanders and shocks the nation. The brothers investigate the gangs of Britain's second city, Birmingham, old and new, and see how gang crime has evolved. They follow the stories of two landmark gang attacks - and two courageous individuals who put their lives on the line to bring the culprits to justice.
