- When Major General Kirby (Kevin McCarthy) lands unannounced at an airbase with a 30-man team to undertake an Operational Readiness Inspection - all hell is let loose at the 904th Strategic Aerospace Wing. Enter Colonel Jim Caldwell (Rock Hudson), who is charged with bringing the whole base up to operational readiness for Cold War activities. But Caldwell soon finds that even his new wife (Mary Peach) is beginning to question who he has become.
