The war at sea had a resounding effect on the outcome of the Second World War. In addition to the heavy German surface vessels; numerous battleships, heavy cruisers and U - Boats took on the brunt of the fighting. These marvels of maritime engineering were pitted against the countless Allied escort vessels in the vastness of the Atlantic Ocean. After war was declared on September 3rd, 1939; two Panzerschiffe and a small number of U - Boats were immediately deployed upon the Atlantic to lay in wait for any Allied threat. After the first few months of war, the Kriegsmarine got as far as the Antarctic Ocean and the strait of Denmark with hundreds of German ships on open seas around the world. The two films on this video show rare and original German film footage of the many varying units of the Kriegsmarine in action, as well as the many songs that were sung aboard ship.
