Beautifully shot and directed low-budget tale of a squadron of soldiers spending time in a haunted house. It’s a slow burner, which won’t please some, but oozes atmosphere. The characters are well played and provide a good mix of personalities. The plot meanders and it isn’t clear where events are headed – or if they are even headed anywhere at all.
The twist will divide people, as twists always do. I didn’t care for it, although it gave a certain degree of sense to the increasingly confusing narrative. That said, I applaud the braveness of the revelation, which changes dramatically the feel of the film. My score is 6 out of 10.
I really enjoyed this film - it is well-made, well-written, well-acted as a group of 5 US GIs are tasked with guarding a mansion which becomes the archetypal haunted house.
And then, well. NO SPOILERS here but let us just say that it is a helluva twist, and one which will divide people. I was not sure about it at first. In fact, I rewound the film a bit before then as I was not sure what I had seen briefly flashed up.
But when I got used to the twist it sort of made sense.
I suppose another version could be made without it, and so then it would be a WWII haunted house horror film only.
A memorable film anyway and well done. I really enjoyed it,. 4 stars.
War Film?, Science Fiction?, Out of the World Experience?, that is the conundrum of this film, but after the first 20 minutes it became one long drag and I gave up trying to make out what was going on, and the ending came as a relief! Even the acting of the cast could not save it!
