Synopsis:
Martin Clunes stars as Mr Chips, the much-loved schoolmaster who devoted his life to Brookfield School and its generations of schoolboys. The story spans over 50 years from young Mr Chipping's arrival at Brookfield in 1880 as an earnest young Latin Master, meeting the love of his life Kathie (who gives him the nickname 'Mr Chips'), through the turmoil of the First Wold War, to Chips' peaceful last days in the 1930s when he has become a school legend. Changed by the influence of his unconventional young wife, Chips becomes a caring teacher who earns the respect and love of the boys in his charge.
Martin Clunes plays Chips throughout - from an idealistic teacher in his late 20s to a wiser, gentler, retired headmaster in his 80s.

Unexpectedly good - Goodbye, Mr. Chips review by CP Customer

I could not believe that Martin Clunes could give such weight to this public school teacher whose career through a second rate public school is followed with deft direction and amazing performances from a cast of complete unknowns. Well done Clunes, and who needs Hollywood, so movingly acted and portrayed.

Well apart from all the excellent performances throughout, and all the rest, I've just finished watching Mr Chips. I'm frothing over with the performance Mr Clunes gave as the very old Headmaster. I thought it specially awesome. What a performance I never saw from a younger actor playing an old geezer (acknowledgements too to the Make up artist) I'm all in a puddle now. Much appreciated and moving. xx

What a truly lovely film! I was most impressed by Martin Clunes, whom I positively hated in 'Men Behaving Badly', and only fell in love with when I accidentally caught an episode of 'Doc Martin' on TV. He is a very gifted and versatile actor and carried this film brilliantly.
