Highly regarded in its native Poland, but relatively unknown in the West, Janusz Morgenstern's debut feature is a touching and visually stunning story of a fleeting love affair. Starring Polish icon Zbigniew Cybulski (known as the 'Polish James Dean') the film also reflects autobiographical aspects of Cybulski's early life as director in the influential 1950's student theatre group Bim Bom which operated from a Gdansk basement. Made in a loose narrative style akin to the French New Wave, the film's cast includes the actors and artists from Bim Bom as well as a young Roman Polanski. A key film of the era, it also features a seductive score by the great Polish composer Krzysztof Komeda (Rosemary's Baby).
