Horse trainer Gerald Coates believes he has accidentally killed his spiteful and philandering socialite wife, Babs, on Grand National night following a heated marital row. Coates panics and foolishly disposes of his drunken wife's body in her lover's car, before catching a late train home. Scotland Yard's resolute Inspector Ayling leads the police enquiry and pursues a game of cat-and-mouse in trying to convict Coates in a murder charge. Friends attempt to help cover-up the crime but the wily detective teases out Coates with mischievous ingenuity. About to be arrested, Coates receives help from an unexpected source...
