USS Indianapolis The U.S. Cruiser Indianapolis was on such a secret mission involving the delivery of an atomic bomb to the Philippines, that when it was torpedoed by the Japanese Submarine 158 on her return journey, no-one realised that her crew were struggling to survive in shark-infested waters. The cruiser was sunk because naval authorities refused to provide her with an anti-submarine escort even though she had no underwater detection devices. It was one of the greatest tragedies to ever befall an American warship and its crew.
The Sinking of HMS Hood With on awesome battery of guns and torpedoes, the battle cruiser HMS Hood was the pride of the Royal Navy. But when she was committed to action against the mighty German battleship Bismarck in May 1941, design blunders committed many years earlier became tragically apparent. A series of ill-conceived refitting and modifications rendered the 21 year old Hood extremely vulnerable to Bismarck's heavy shells. When Hood mas hit; she went down so quickly that the crew had no chance of survival.
