Portillo is a "boomer", born in the decade after the end of the Second World War, in the same year as the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. As he travels the length and breadth of Britain, he recalls the optimism and excitement of rebuilding a nation exhausted by war. He remembers the bomb sites and the shrinking of empire but also Britain's pride in the nation's victory.
