In the mid 1800's South Wales Railway was trying to find a suitable site for a new railway station, Isambard Kingdom Brunel solved the issue by diverting the River Taff to create a larger, safer site for the building of the railway station. In 1932, the Great Western Railway rebuilt the station in fine Art Deco style and although recently refurbished for 21st century use, many original features are retained in this wonderful listed building. Cardiff has always been key to industrial distribution taking coal from the valleys and goods from the docks. Today, Cardiff Central Station caters for nearly 10 million passengers every year with up to 31,000 passengers passing through the station in a single day for Millennium Stadium events.
