Pip (Ioan Gruffudd / Gabriel Thomson) is destined to be a blacksmith on the Kent marshes like his brother-in-law Joe (Clive Russell), but he longs to be a gentleman. The boy's world is interrupted by two strange meetings. First, he has a terrifying encounter with an escaped convict, Abel Magwitch (Bernard Hill), on the marshes. In an act of kindness, Pip risks the wrath of his bad-tempered sister by stealing food from her pantry to take to the starving man. Second, he is summoned by the eccentric and rich Miss Havisham (Charlotte Rampling) to be a playmate for her ward Estella (Justine Waddell / Gemma Gregory). Pip's visits to the reclusive old woman's mansion raise his expectations, both of winning the heart of the beautiful but cruel Estella and of one day becoming a gentleman.
