This programme is a documentary about the role played by artillery in World War I and World War II. It was Stalin who described guns as "The Gods of War", and this programme, made in the late 20th century, traces the development of artillery power and gunnery technique from 1914 to 1945. The advances in technical design and capability enabled new strategic applications to be deployed which kept artillery at the forefront of successful wartime land campaigns. Guns are seen in both their offensive and defensive contexts, and the demonstration of their awesome power of destruction confirms their position as The Gods of War.
